Xwin.exe - Xorg-server package

Added by Redsandro _ 4 months ago

One of those very valuable things in cygwin is XWin.exe - an X server which is the remote desktop tool of choice.

XWin.exe -clipboard -once -rootless -nodecoration -notrayicon -query [servername] connects you to that linuxcomputer in your LAN, can log in from GDM and everything. Gives you X windows mingling with your Windows windows. It's better than NX and way better than VNC. It doesn't even require installation, contrary to NX or VNC servers, because Linux - sort of duh - already comes with X.

That was my way of saying: Could/should this be added to Cygwin Portable? I believe it is in the Xorg-server package. Cygwin-setup automatically installs dependencies, don't know them by heart.

Hi,

I never used XWin.exe but, from your description of it, seems really nice.

I think that issue #7 will simplify the process of installing new packages in/from Cygwin.

For download size reason, I don't think we should install X by default.

Thanks for your comment.

You can just do that? Install extra packages in a portable cygwin?

I thought maybe some complicated magic needed to be taken into account because normally things get sort of integrated into Windows. Although I don't know about anything that resides in the Windows directory or something, the extreme ease of breaking things and the excessive amount of purging needed to fix it, as constrained by the many google results about repairing broken cygwin functionality, led me to learn about Cygwin Portable in the first place.

But thanks, I didn't know about those package managers.

Bash seems to work fine out of the box though, even though the frontpage sais: Cygwin Portable depends on the PortableApps project.

You are right. I should rephrase the description. Cygwin-Portable is packaged in a way that the PortableApps recognize so you get the CygwinPortable icon in the PA launcher. But you can use it without PortableApps also.
